Accountability: Podcast Focus, Entreleadership Hiring

Hello!

As one of my tasks every sprint is to review podcasts and the themes which arise I thought one thing which may be interesting, instead of constantly reviewing them as a series may be to drill down on to one key area.

For the first of these Podcast Focus sessions I'm looking at is the Entreleadership approach to hiring. Now as I've mentioned before, Ramsey is seen as a divisive figure but his company is consistently voted as one of the best places to work in his state. Part of this will be directly associated with the hiring process, so, why is this?

Passion

“Passion is so key in leading and creating excellence that I will hire passion over education or talent every time. I prefer to have both, but given a choice I will take passion. La Rochefoucauld once said, “The most untutored person with passion is more persuasive than the most eloquent without.”
EntreLeadership: 20 Years of Practical Business Wisdom from the Trenches by Dave Ramsey

When interviewing someone they must have a good understanding of what's expected of them on a daily basis and they must be competent. But what separates people with equal talent? Personality and passion, with a drive to succeed.

When building a team we must work to ensure they have a hunger and drive to do their job to the best of the ability, and the way we do that is try to cultivate a positive environment where individuals feel that they can succeed. Ask yourself, would you rather hire someone with first who had a dour personality and came across uninterested, or a candidate with a 2.1 who was excited at the prospect of the job?

“Hire slow. Fire fast.”
EntreLeadership: 20 Years of Practical Business Wisdom from the Trenches by Dave Ramsey

Imagine your team as a perfect pot of white paint. Pristine and gleaming, the paint is all of one shade of the most brilliant white. Without checking you accidentally add a glob of black paint and mix it. You will never again have that shade of white paint again, the influence has already spread and made your paint grey. By adding gallons and gallons of white paint you may be able to remove the strength and influence of the that colour but it will not get back to that brilliant white glow.

Your team is precious, and it must be protected before you would add a new component that you must be completely certain is a match before hiring. Ramsey uses anecdotes to illustrate his point, but it can be boiled down to the four words, 'hire slow, fire fast'. Be sure that there is a match and when there isn't remove it quickly to stop any damage.

“People will not buy from you if they don’t trust you, your product, and your company.”
Dave Ramsey, EntreLeadership: 20 Years of Practical Business Wisdom from the Trenches

Hire trustworthy people, if you don't trust them, will your team trust them? Will your customer trust you? Similar to the above point, if your team is trustworthy why would you hire someone you think could ruin the external perception of your team?

"Gossip is defined as discussing anything negative with someone who can’t help solve the problem. If you’re having computer problems, and IT is slow about helping you, you don’t complain about it to the sales rep in the break room. You talk to your leader because he or she can and will do something about it."

Ramsey is known for his zero tolerance gossip policy and it shows in his hiring. This is also a personal peeve of mine. Discuss positive things, celebrate them, but why be bitching and moaning? Yes, if you complain about something you have no control over I understand you may feel stressed, but what good will it do? If you complain over something you can control, but just want to complain, not necessarily vent, but complain, I have no time for you. You drag me down, go away and let me be awesome in my role.

Thanks for reading this slightly different post, if you liked it let me know and I can potentially change my accountability progress approach this way.

Accountability: Podcast Performance

Hello!

Continuing on my personal development journey I've ensured that I get quality audio content every day from a variety of competing sources. I've attempted to make sure that the podcasts I listen to vary in their approach and style.

I've done this to widen my knowledge but also to not get carried away by one kind of business guidance. For example, I do enjoy the Entreleadership podcast by Dave Ramsey's team, however the conservative Christian message clashes with my own personal views. That's not to say that I think Ramsey's team is wrong, but as I have no deep religious feeling I may gloss over slightly when the team or guests start quoting the bible. I do get the points and find the verse interpretations relevant, but I'm a heavy critic of the Christian right.
Entrepreneur on Fire's podcast is a refreshing change in tone to the Christian heavy message of Entreleadership, with a different guest on each day if one day doesn't click I can find another one quickly. What sometimes frustrates me about EOF is the type of guests presented. Some are fantastic entrepreneurs who have truly created something of value and interest, and then some are email and content marketers. I used to find the host grating sometimes but then it clicked, as he grew in his skill I didn't get so irritated.

QTD podcasts in comparison to the others podcasts last around 10 minutes each. Whilst other podcasts last around 30-40 minutes with interviews the QTD are quick and simple tips, expanding on doing one thing well. Like a TED talk each presents a simple concept and addresses them directly.

I'd recommend any of the above podcast series!

As an agile Timelord I want to listen to 4 business podcasts a week so that I learn more about business culture and best practices. This sprint I plan on continuing to listen to Entrepreneur on Fire and Entreleadership podcasts, adding in Quick and Dirty Tips
As an agile Timelord I want to rewrite my CV so that I keep abreast of my skillset and can compare myself to other professionals in the marketplaceRewrite my CV so it is fully up to date
As an agile Timelord I want to learn how to code so that I can understand a selection of coding languages and processesUse Khan Academy or Codecademy to learn basic coding

So how did I do?

Completed 'Ready Player One', CV update completed and valued, currently reviewing actions on 'Happiness by Design', podcasts listened to, up to date with EOFire (fancy new intro from JLD) and learning JS with Khan Academy.

Pretty happy with the progress so far.

Spiritual:

StoriesTasks
As an agile Timelord I want to feel calm and confident through meditation so that I am less stressedI will download the Headspace meditation app and work through the 10 day programme

Tried with this but still not to my satisfaction, making actual time in the day has been difficult however I'm determined to make meditation a part of my daily routine to help me destress and focus.

Health:

StoriesTasks
As an agile Timelord I want to work out at least 5 times a week so that I lose weight and tone my body.I will use a fitness DVD in the mornings, waking up an hour earlier to do so
As an agile Timelord I want to walk at least 10,000 steps each day so I set myself an active benchmark to lose weight.I will track my steps using a Fitbit Charge HR tracking my progress using the app and dashboard. As such I will aim to have a weekly accumulative total of 70,000 steps
As an agile Timelord I want to chart my progress and set a target of losing 2lb of weight a week so that I can reach my overall goal.My current weight is 199lb, by weighing myself daily and keeping up with my more active lifestyle I will track my progress

Slightly disappointed with my progress, or lack of, with regards to the workout. The reason for this is due to me falling a little ill during the sprint and having no energy in the morning. Falling out of the habit made it difficult to revive it.

However, the FitBit has given me a positive nudge and I average at over 100,000 steps per week.

Personal Growth:

StoriesTasks
As an agile Timelord I want to be able to feel confident in any situation so that I am comfortableI will attend the local Toastmasters meeting to build up my confidence in public situations and learn greater public speaking habits

As an agile Timelord I want to learn best practices of speakers so that I am a competent speaker myselfWatch 5 TED talks

How did I do?

Very happy with this, I'm happy that I'm now a Toastmaster, I've written a first draft of an important speech and have watched some incredible TED talks, hoping to emulate the performance in future sprints!

Social/Community:

StoriesTasks
As an agile Timelord I want a growing blog so that I grow my writing skillsI will update the blog daily informing of my progress, experiences and future plans.
As an agile Timelord I want to take a role within the Charity Committee so that I can help the community whilst also developing my skillsThe company charity committee is growing and I hope to be a significant part of it's development. I will organise, attend and drive meetings

A new day brings with it a new blog post and the charity committee is spinning out new ideas.

It will be an interesting retrospective!
